When can I introduce Tomatoes to my baby?

Tomatoes are typically not recommended to be introduced to an infant until somewhere between the 10th and the 12th month of age. The reason for this is not due to possible allergies per se, rather the acidity of tomatoes may prove harsh on a more immature tummy.

Tomatoes are actually fruits and they contain a high level of acidity that may prove harsh on a tiny tummy as we mentioned. With that being said, there are many babies who have eaten tomatoes prior to the recommended age and have had no issues. Many parents offer babies tomatoes as early as 8 months old.

Should you decide to offer tomatoes, please use fresh only. Also, please be sure to offer the tomatoes cooked - either as a sauce or sauteed with other veggies. It is said that cooking the tomatoes (much like cooking strawberries) may reduce the acidity and be more gentle on a tiny tummy.

Please also speak with your pediatrician about introducing foods that may cause allergies or may be difficult for a tiny tummy to digest. If you notice a rash around the lips/mouth and the bottom, this could be indicative of baby having a reaction to the acidity of the tomatoes. Please keep a look out for such occurrences. As always, we recommend that you consult with your baby's pediatrician on introducing solid foods as generalities may not apply to your infant.

How to select and store Tomatoes for baby food

When selecting Tomatoes for homemade baby food, try to purchase fresh whenever possible. Choose unbruised or otherwise unblemished tomatoes that are a bright red. When possible, buy tomatoes that are still on their vines as they will remain more fresh. Always purchase tomatoes that are firm but nor hard; you may always ripen tomatoes on the counter.

Tomatoes should never be refrigerated until they

(1) have been cooked,
(2) have been cut or put into a raw dish like a salsa, or
(3) are fully ripe and would spoil if left further at room temperature.

Place tomatoes stem end up, and don't put them on a sunny windowsill to hasten ripening. Instead, put tomatoes in a sealed paper bag with or without ethylene-producing fruit such as bananas. Ripe tomatoes will hold at room temperature for two or three days. Ripe tomatoes you've refrigerated to keep from spoiling will taste better if you bring them to room temperature before eating.(a)

What is the difference between a Yam and a Sweet Potato?

So is it a Yam or is it a Sweet Potato? In the United States, Yams and Sweet Potatoes are one and the same and the terms are used interchangeably for the same vegetable. The word "yam" originates from the African word "nyami" which is a starchy root. True yams are tubers. They are found in Africa and the Caribbean and sometimes in Europe. True yams can grow up to 100 pounds and attain a length of seven feet. Sweet potatoes are "storage roots" and seldom grow to be larger than 2 pound each. Sweet potatoes are in the Morning Glory family and Yams are in their own Yam family. There is a clear difference between the two species and they are not even remotely related.

The difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes in the United States is only in the labeling, the color, the texture and the marketing. What is referred to as a "yam" in the Unites States is the darker reddish skinned, orange fleshed sweet potato. It is typically more sweet and moist. The term "yam" that has been applied to this type of sweet potato was coined by those in the Southern part of the United States. Throughout the South, "yams" are the most commonly used of the sweet potato varietals.

What is referred to as Sweet Potato on the other hand, is the lighter, brownish skinned type. This variety is more dry and starchy than the "yam' and is not as sweet. It also resembles the texture of regular white potatoes.

How to select and store sweet potatoes for baby food

When selecting yams/sweet potatoes for homemade baby food, make sure to select those that are unbruised and without brown or soft spots.
For proper storage, be sure to keep them in a cool, dark, dry area. Yams/Sweet Potatoes may be kept for up to two weeks. Do NOT refrigerate sweet potatoes.

hint White or Light colored Sweet Potatoes are more dry and not as tasty as the orange colored sweet potatoes.

As with most cooked foods, they may be kept refrigerated for 2 to 3 days after being cooked. Sweet potatoes freeze well.

what Hari Raya Open House ?

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a major occasion in the Islamic calendar. It marks the end of Ramadhan and the beginning of Syawal. During Ramadhan, all Muslims must fast during daylight hours for at least 30 days. Because Islam uses the lunar cycle to determine important days, Ramadhan and Syawal occur in different months in the Gregorian calendar each year.

While observing the fast, indulgence of any sort, like food, drink, or sexual activity, is forbidden. During Ramadan special prayers (sembahyang Terawih) lasting some two hours are performed every night in mosques. After prayers, Muslims also spend some time reciting the Koran before retiring. The ideal is to complete the entire book before the end of the fasting month, and the arrival of Syawal.
During the month of Syawal (otherwise known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa), many Muslims open the doors of their homes to welcome all, bringing together people irrespective of creed, culture and position to participate in the rejoicing. An open house brings people together regardless of their religion, position or background. Local favourites like ketupat (rice wrapped in coconut leaves), peanut sauce and rendang (a dry spicy beef dish) are served.

Large scale open houses, like those organized by political figures are announced via the mass media. Due to the extraordinarily volume of attendees, large scale open houses are usually held at venues big enough to hold colossal events. A steady stream of visitors can be seen making their way to open houses during scheduled times, not only to eat and have fun, but to meet the country’s leaders.
Tourists are most welcomed to such events. Hari Raya Aidilfitri officially begins at the sighting of the moon on the last day of Ramadhan, and is the most joyous celebration of the Muslim community. The sighting of the first moon of the following month, Syawal, by religious elders signals the eve of Hari Raya. The festival begins the following day. Weeks before the big day, excitement mounts as the house is thoroughly cleaned and readied for the celebration with new furnishing and decorations, and festive fare is feverishly prepared. Flight, train and long distance coach tickets are quickly sold out as it is customary for Muslim families to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri together, while others take advantage of the two-day public holiday to go somewhere or return to their hometowns.

On the morning of the first day of Hari Raya, it is customary for the men to attend special prayers at the mosques, followed by a visit the cemetery with family members to pray for the departed souls of loved ones. They then make their way home to receive visiting relatives and friends. The noble act of asking for forgiveness from each other for all past wrongdoings and grievances is a must on this day. The rumah terbuka or open house concept is prevalent in the Malaysian culture especially during major festivals and celebrations like the Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Christmas. His Majesty, the King of Malaysia and Muslim government leaders also hold ‘open houses’ for the public at their official residences. Likewise in many homes throughout the country, family members visit each other and friends from different religious and ethnic communities are welcome to join in the celebration. Hari Raya Aidilfitri, is celebrated for 30 days and the festive greeting is “Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri”.
